The soap has to be whipped up to a lather, and for that purpose you can pretty much use everything that suits your temperament and technique. As shown below you can use anything that just lies in front of you, or something customized for the purpose.
You don't need a bowl or mug to create lather, it is possible to face lather og create the lather in the palm of your hand, but it is a bit easier to control the right amount of soap and water in a bowl.
